We've added lots of info about the dive sites in Thailand and Burma. Diving at Hin Daeng in Southern Thailand

During our Southern Dive Safari we visit also one of our favorite dive sites, called Hin Daeng. This dive site is closely situated to another great dive site Hin Muang.

About diving at Hin Daeng in Southern Thailand

Hin Daeng protrudes about 3 meters above the water, but below, it drops straight down to 60+ meters on the southern side. The dive site got it's name from the beautiful red corals that populate most of the dive site.

The south western side drops to over 60 meters, creating a steep wall of soft corals. Leopard sharks are often seen in this area. The eastern side has the best soft coral growth and two ridges that slope gently into deeper water. Jacks hang out often close to the rock.

In shallower areas moray eels are commonly found hiding in cracks in the rock face. Hin Daeng is also good for critters such as nudibranchs, cowrie shells and various species of shrimps.

During the end of the season, we usually have a good chance to see here whale sharks or manta rays.

About the Surin Islands

The Surin National Marine Park (Thai: หมู่เกาะสุรินทร์, Thai pronunciation: [mùː kɔ̀ʔ sùʔrin]) is an archipelago of five islands of the Andaman Sea, 55 km from the Thai mainland. Administratively, the islands are part of Tambon Ko Phra Thong, Amphoe Khura Buri, in Phang Nga Province, Thailand.

Mu Ko  Surin National Marine Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติหมู่เกาะสุรินทร์) encompasses the islands and their surrounding waters. The park is home to one of the most famous dive sites in the world, Richelieu Rock. In addition the islands feature pristine reefs, making it home to some of the best snorkeling in Thailand.

Geography

The five islands are Ko Surin Nuea, Ko Surin Tai, Ko Ri, Ko Kai, and Ko Klang, with Ko Surin Nuea and Ko Surin Tai being the two main islands of the group. The Thai-Burmese oceanic border is a few kilometers north of the park. Christie Island, Burma's southernmost point, lies 18 km to the north of Ko Surin Nuea and about 100 km to the south is Mu Koh Similan National Marine Park.

Diving at Anemone Reef in Southern Thailand

The dive site Anemone Reef is a completely submerged dive site and is situated nearby Phuket in Southern Thailand. Near Anemone Reef, you can find 2 other dive sites: King Cruiser Wreck and Shark Point.

Visibility: Fair to excellent
Currents: Fair to moderate

About diving at Anemone Reef in Thailand

Anemone Reef soars 30 meter up from a sandy sea floor to just beneath the surface. This barely submerged reef is located less than a mile north of the dive site Shark Point. Although some describe the Reef from Anemone Reef not as colorful as the reef from Shark Point, you can have a beautiful relaxing dive here. Huge fields of sea anemones cover every conceivable surface and swing and sway with the current, creating an illusion of it being a giant living rock. Enormous schools of tropical fish like snappers, groupers, fusiliers, jacks, barracudas, the colorful photogenic clown fish and occasional leopard sharks can be seen passing by.

Diving with Guitarfish at Christmas Point

About the Guitarfish

The guitarfish are a family, Rhinobatidae, of rays. The guitarfish are known for an elongated body with a flattened head and trunk and small ray like wings. The combined range of the various species is tropical, subtropical and temperate waters worldwide.  

Wikipedia describes that these animals travel often in large groups: in the Andaman Sea we always see them being solo or with a baby. It is very rare to see a Guitarfish in the Andaman Sea while diving.

Guitarfish have a body form intermediate between those of sharks and rays. The tail has a typical shark-like form, but in many species, the head has a triangular, or guitar-like shape, rather than the disc-shape formed by fusion with the pectoral fins found in other rays.

Reproduction

Guitarfish are ovoviviparous, which means the embryo matures inside an egg that is inside the mother until it is ready to hatch. This is not unusual for rays, as most are like this.

Habitat

Guitarfish are bottom feeders, which bury themselves in mud or sand and eat things such as worms, crabs, and clams. Most can tolerate saltwater, freshwater, and brackish water. They generally live close to the beach/coastline or in estuaries as far underwater as 30 meters.
